ABOUT ALEXIS

Alexis Peterson is a Stanford- and Harvard-educated private tutor with over 20 years of professional tutoring experience. She scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT as a junior in high school and scored a perfect 36 on the ACT on her first attempt (but to be fair, she was about 30 years old at the time). She regularly sits for the standardized tests she tutors (and some that she doesn’t, to keep things exciting) and has an extensive resume of 99th-percentile test scores. She legitimately just really likes tests.

Alexis founded Alexis Prep in order to help as many students as possible actually enjoy the test prep process. At Alexis Prep, we are passionate about coaching students to their best possible performance on any exam. As such, our courses are always 100% customized to our students, and we believe ardently that no two test preparation plans should be alike.

About our tutors

Alexis Prep tutors undergo a competitive selection process, are trained one-on-one by Alexis, and work closely with Alexis in designing and executing each individual student's test preparation plan. Alexis works tirelessly behind the scenes to continually analyze individual student performance and the test questions themselves, as she is passionate about continuously improving our content and our teaching methods. Like our students, we should all be constantly learning.

At Alexis Prep, our primary goal is to instill well-founded confidence in all our students. We also aspire to develop a love for standardized tests in all. Our students report improved confidence, higher scores, and admit they actually somewhat enjoy test prep—a rather serious compliment in this industry.

WE’re DIFFERENT (AND quantifiably better)

All our work is based on Alexis’ love of data-driven customization. This is NOT a typical tutoring approach—it is more efficient, more natural, and it is about 3 times more enjoyable than whatever the other way would be described as. Alexis’ obsessive analytical skills are put to work identifying important patterns that exist in every student’s work, and Alexis Prep uses those patterns to focus and refine each student’s learning plan as we go. So basically, Alexis Prep students have a team of perfectionists continually analyzing and fine-tuning each aspect of their prep. The result is that the majority of our students meet or exceed their goal scores, because data-driven customization gets results.

We can’t wait to help you achieve your goals!

meEt our team

It is an absolute given that tutors should be highly educated, academically gifted, and deeply knowledgeable. But at Alexis Prep, we believe that is simply the minimum requirement for entry into the position. An Alexis Prep tutor is a natural teacher. As a team, we pride ourselves on the adjectives with which we are most commonly described: Engaging. Friendly. Kind. Enthusiastic. Fun.

Our guiding principle is actually more of a story: Once, we had a parent call to request that we skip her child's normally-scheduled Sunday tutoring session. About an hour later, the parent was back on the phone. Her child had been so upset that tutoring was cancelled—could we please reschedule? It remains one of our favorite compliments, and it defines how we think about tutoring. Our tutoring should always be so great that students will actually complain to their parents if they have to miss a session.

Alexis ann peterson

The test-obsessed founder of Alexis Prep, Alexis would ask for and receive test preparation books for most holidays even as a young child (truly). Despite this worrisome fact, she is entirely socially acceptable. Alexis did not realize test prep would become her life until 2016, when she quit her day job and officially launched the earliest version of Alexis Prep. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Alexis attended Stanford University on full athletic scholarship as a member of the Women’s Crew Team. She went on to earn her Master’s degree at Harvard University and then spent two years studying French at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She is a certified personal trainer and triathlete in her spare time.

LIZ CORDONIER, head tutor

Liz boasts a Ph.D. in Molecular Nutrition from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as well as a B.S. in Biochemistry from West Virginia University. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine studying the role of the brain in obesity and diabetes, and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Lone Star College. Liz began tutoring engineering students in chemistry as an undergrad, and has been teaching high school, college, and graduate students in a variety of capacities since.  She is passionate about tutoring students in math and science because she wants students to realize that these subjects do not have to be overwhelming! Liz tutors for the ACT, SAT, ISEE, high school math (algebra, geometry, precalculus, AP Stats), high school science (on-level biology, AP Biology, on-level chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology), and French (all high school levels, including AP). Liz is also an executive functioning and study skills coach for students of all ages.

Jenny Mauk, Head of ADMIN

Jenny claims she is NOT a natural test-taker. She is, however, a high achieving and efficiency obsessed mom of two (probably) over-scheduled girls. Jenny graduated Magna Cum Laude in only three years from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in French (thank you AP credits!). Jenny loves chatting with parents and students about all things test prep, and a call with her is typically the first step in helping us create a fully-customized plan for each of our students.

Emma 2020 copy.jpg

emma sargent

An outside observer could have guessed Emma might become a tutor from a young age, as she thought a fun childhood pastime was playing the “GRE vocabulary flashcards” app on her mother’s phone.
